As part of BBC Radio 2’s Billie Holiday season, Out Loud Media has produced an hour long special presented by Billie Holiday fan Neneh Cherry. To mark the 50th anniversary of the singer’s death, the programme goes back to the underworld of 1940s
Using archive material from the narcotics officer assigned to the Billie Holiday case, as well as interviews with people who knew and played with her, this programme reveals Billie Holiday’s transformation from prisoner in a federal penitentiary to the pinnacle of her career, centre stage at Carnegie hall, all in just 11 days.
